Tips to Overcome homesickness when you starting out in University...

Feeling homesick? It’s okay there’s nothing to be ashamed or hide it because everyone goes through this feeling at least once when they are living away from home...

And even I did, So here are some tips which helped to feel better and I hope they work for you too.

1) Don’t give yourself a hard time

Don’t pressurise yourself to be perfect or well settled at least for a month or two because it’s okay if you are still settling in and making friends. Remember everything is new for you so you are just taking it in and no one is perfect. RELAX !!

2) Don’t spend too much time in your room

Yes, your room is your safe place but spending your days inside your room will make you more depressed or sad which will worsen things up , trust me I have made that mistake.

Go and sit in your commonplace at your accommodation even though you don’t have friends there at least you will be between people.

3) Keep your expectations realistic

Starting a whole new journey in life means you have dreams and you have scenarios in your head which you want them to happen.

Sorry to burst that bubble but your expectation might not match the reality you see so come with no hope.

4) Pack some home comfort with yourself

Bring something with yourself that reminds you of home and happy memory with your loved ones.

5) Explore your new home

Best way to kill your time when you don’t have classes or work, explore your new home. Make a list of places/museums / galleries/markets you want to visit and just go out.

6) Take a break from Skype/FaceTime

Talking back home every day is a great way to be in touch with them, but at times it backfires, you might start missing home more. So try and skip one day or two without talking back home (sounds a bit harsh but it’s important) when I say a break from calling them which includes messaging too.

7) Hide behind a camera

Capture!!! It’s not essential that you have or don’t have an expensive camera, but you have a fantastic phone just capture each day.. make memories. Getting your morning cup of coffee click that or eating alone for the first time catch it.

8) Write a journal

I know not everyone likes writing, but journaling your days when you are living away from home is a perfect way of expressing your feelings when you have no one to do that. It’s not important to write it by hand just write it on your phone notes every night before sleeping.

9) Join clubs/society

Every university has clubs or organisation, join them this way you meet new people and keep yourself busy between classes. Take a new hobby and work on it.

10) Don’t OVERTHINK

Very important when I say don’t overthink your life that’s how you go downhill. Just go with the flow of life, and even if something bad happens, it’s okay.

So, I hope this list helps you, and it helped me.
