Hi, I am back with another post, and it’s about an event I recently attended, a summary and my thoughts about it in a nutshell.
I am studying a master’s degree in London College of Communication which is one of the sixth colleges under the University of Arts London, and they have this event yearly called Graduate futures week for students.
The event takes place in all six campuses on different days so this time it was from 15-18April 2019, there are like 13 events in one day in the respective colleges.
I attended a few events in Central saint martins and few in my university too, So I will be telling you about two events /talks I attended on 18th April in London college of communication.
#Talk One - How to book Freelance work and brand yourselves Online by Nissy Tee
Nissy Tee took her first work into the media world at the age of 15 where she was interviewing artist in a nightclub, after that her she started producing and presenting her own local show on a radio station, since then she is hosting events and interviewing people making her way into the media industry day by day.
She went to Cambridge University to pursue a degree, is currently a content creator with a YouTube channel with over millions view. She is a motivational speaker and a host, as well as a confidence coach and a social media marketing consultant helping brands to build their online presence.
I really enjoyed the talk because I will be honest there are some talks which just bores you even if the topic is relevant to me, but it’s the way the presenter decides to do the whole event.
The way she was talking was terrific making sure the audience doesn’t lose interest by not talking in a bookish language but by telling us her story in the most real way, I felt in some parts I was connecting to her story.
Few points I took away from this talk are:
- Being EXTRAORDINARY
- The Journey (Process of becoming or achieving something in life will be hard and messy, but that’s what it’s all about)
- Being COMFORTABLE with being UNCOMFORTABLE
- Pain becoming Purpose: We all go through something in our life which is dark and disturbing to a point we break completely as human, and it doesn’t have to be like that because I learned if we take that pain as our driving force towards our goals.
- Shoot Your Shot
- Servitude precedes Success
- Seeing Beyond Sight
These seven points are the most essential points to learn to make it in the world and putting yourselves out to be seen by millions of people.
So, if you like what you read then you should check her out, I will be leaving all the social media links at the end of the blog.
#Talk Two – The Art of Promotion: Creative Tips for getting yourself out there by Emma Jane Palin
She started blogging in 2015 since then made her way into the creative industry by winning awards for her blog, freelance writer, creating absolutely awestruck work, design, interiors.
I took away a lot from her talk she was giving us accurate facts about working in the creative industry which is something I like not sugar-coating things and just talking with her personal experience and what should we take from her stories when we go out into the real world.
Few Points I took from this talk:
- Your blog/website is your shop window: If you are a blogger /artist/Photographer who has a blog or website for your work, it should speak about you and your work unequivocally.
- Buy your Domain/Website: Something I am guilty if I haven't bought my domain name because I am scared and after the talk, I am considering it because it’s essential for people to see if you are serious about your work which you are putting out.
- About ME – The section on website/blogger about me should be on point with the links to your socials which is very important because if a client’s checks our your site but your about me section is not telling them the exact information about you they won’t bother finding out and will move on.
- Keep your social media Professional: Have a personal Instagram/Twitter/Facebook which totally for your friends & Family where you can just post your life but on the other hand have a business account which is strictly for your work. Don’t mix your personal experience into your profession.
- Collaborate: VERY IMPORTANT!!
- Don’t attach PDF in a job email: DO something different which will push the employer to invite you for an interview. E.g., Letter (handwritten) deliver it or go to their head office to deliver your CV personally.
This part is about how to target your press/ company you really want to work with.
- Engage with them on social media
- Make a list of people you want to work with and try sending in messages by telling them how their work is inspiring them/ basically try engaging so that they can see your name in their accounts popping up.
- One sheet BIO – Straightforward yet complicated (try writing one-page bio which is readable and doesn’t take someone’s time)
- Personalise your email/letter which you send to prospectus companies for work.
- Knowledge is Power: Learn about SEO /domain authority/ Promotional emails which is very crucial for you.
- Skills – Keep learning and perfecting your skills because the more you know, the better.
- Build your database (Newsletter)
- Research your market
- Community over Competition: BE KIND ( If you got an offer for work but if you think you can’t do it just don’t ignore it suggest someone you know which will show you are not insecure, and someday that person might return the favour when you need help.
- Go to events /network/talk to people
- Know your worth
- IGNORE the fear
If you want to check her work, I will be leaving the link to her blog and social media accounts.
After attending these two talks, I got a better idea about my future work and how to get into this industry with a little bit of ease.
The critical thing I learned is hard work and hustle is very very important, if you want something in life keep on pushing yourself to the point where even you will be surprised by yourselves, take your failures and make it your strong point by challenging them, proving them wrong.
I am grateful to my university in organising these events for us to attend and gaining perspective for our futures.
